When it comes to selfie smartphones, no brand has stood out more than OPPO. The company practically kick-started the selfie phone craze with the F3, so people have a very high regard for its successor, the OPPO F5. But nobody stays on top forever. Can the newcomer, the Vivo V7+, take on OPPO's pride and glory in the selfie expert range?

These two phones are definitely competing on the same battlefield. Both phones have a large 6-inch 18:9 "FullView" display, a selfie focus and similar pricing, so it'll be a very tight comparison. That said, there are some key differentiators between the two phones.

The OPPO F5 packs a 6-inch FHD+ display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Its resolution is also greater at 2,160 x 1,080 pixels. This gives it an advantage over the Vivo V7+ which has a slightly smaller 5.99-inch display with a much lower resolution, 1,440 x 720 pixels. The V7+ is also protected by Gorilla Glass 3 only. This is clearly in the F5's favor.

The F5 packs a MediaTek Helio P23 processor, which is generally a better, more expensive chipset than the V7+'s Snapdragon 450. MediaTek actually had to slash prices on the P23 to compete with the Snapdragon 450, and generally the P23 has the faster CPU processor and the better GPU. That said, Qualcomm's Snapdragon line is more popular and gets better support from developers, and game developers prefer to optimize for the Adreno GPU the Snapdragon 450 has over the Helio P23's Mali-G71. So this part is a bit of a wash.

The real test though is in the cameras. The F5 has a 16-megapixel f/1.8 rear camera, while the V7+ touts a similar 16-megapixel f/2.0 camera. On paper the F5 has a slight advantage with its larger aperture, but the real test is in the selfie cameras. The F5 uses a 20-megapixel f/2.0 camera and has AI Beautification Technology filters, while the V7+ uses a 24-megapixel f/2.0 lens with Moonlight Glow. While the V7+ has the advantage on paper, in practice the F5 produces better shots with its software filters.

The rest of the specifications are generally in favor of the V7+, with twice the internal storage (64 GB to the F5's 32 GB) and a slightly larger battery (3,225 mAh over 3,200 mAh). But the final clincher is the price: the F5 goes for PHP 15,990, while the V7+ is significantly more expensive at PHP 17,990. In the end, that may be the true decider of this contest.
